Why did Matt Gaetz run for reelection and then resign before being sworn in?

He resigned from the current session of Congress. He can't resign from the next session because it hasn't happened yet. I am no congressional scholar, so have no basis to refute the newscast that stated resigning from the current session does not automatically resign from the next. If he isn't a member of the current session the investigations team can't release their report. I have no idea whetjher that report could be published in the next session, or whether it just dies at the end of this one.
I, and a bunch of other Trump voters let out a sigh of relief when he announced his resignation from the Atty General nom and Congress. The whole thing may have been a bit of what we military folk term "cover and deception", in that the brouhaha ove Gaetz may have relieved some of the pressure on other nominees like Gabbard and Hegseth. By the way, Bondi is a good choice. Like a liberal talk show guy said, she is competent to carry out the Trump agenda.
Happy Thanksgiving to all,

Two reasons. He was the nominee for AG and resigned to allow DeSantis to fill his seat before Jan 3rd when Congress comes back. Two, once he resigned the ethics investigation, which I am sure uncovered some unflattering things, was moot.
But more to the point, his nomination exposed which GOP Senators were going to be a problem with Trump implementing the agenda for which he was elected. Considering there are four of them it is not going to be easy to get things done that the American people want until after the midterms and even then, it would not be surprising to see the House flip as it often does.
