Lake Martin Boaters and Recreationalists,
USCG AUX. 8-12 has been on the lake patrolling on a consistent basis since late February. One our missions has been supporting the safety of the Stillwaters Yacht Club races every other weekend. Some of you may or may not have noticed our presence (which is a good thing when you don't need us) in the area at or near Stillwaters. We have also repaired a few safety buoys on the lake prior to the water rise. If you notice an issue with a buoy please let me know at freemms@auburn.edu. We may be able to repair it even with the water level up, but if anything we can address the issue in the fall when the water level lowers.
We'd also like for everyone to know that we have added capability to provide more on water patrols this summer. With the substantial decrease in Marine Police presence, the state has asked us to increase our patrols when possible. The Coast Guard has been hit with sequestration as hard as anyone, but we won't let that keep us from getting out on the water.
If you (or a business owner) would like to provide us with a fuel donation we'd greatly appreciate it. Right now most of our extra fuel resource comes from our own pockets. It's our duty to act, but we'd love to have support if available. If you'd like to become a partner with U.S. Coast Guard Flotilla 8-12, send notice of intent to Cdr. Michael Freeman at freemms@auburn.edu. Flotilla 8-12 is comprised of an all volunteer group of men and women who train and develop for the advancement of boating safety and environmental protection.
Thank you in advance!
