Anybody know how to measure the depth of water you will have for your dock? I've been told to put a pole in the water, measure up the poll the number feet currently under full pool, then tie a line from that spot to the dock. Will this work?

In case anyone is wondering why in the world I need to do this, I'm checking out a lot that I might purchase.
