Being a geek and using computers in my lively hood, I've known only 1-reason for the existence of computers. To speed-up a process we currently do manually. To this day, I hardly ever use Calculator to balance my checkbook or calculate any other numbers. Rarely do I use the Spell-Check or Thesaurus in letters. And Databases are just big filing cabinets (very simple comparison).
Heck, how did people do their work prior to the propagation of computers? Good, ol' brain-power. And what will happen IF all access to computers & technology is cut-off, e.g., giant E-M-P shuts-down everything (ok, far-fetched, but what-if)?
My kids are going to learn to do everything manually before using the PC. Once they know how to do it in their heads, fine, double-check on the PC. But, don't become a "slave" to the machine.
