and dish could be part of this, but wasn't mentioned...but

if your familiar with netflix, as many dvds as you can watch a month for 17.88 or close, 3 at a time, TIVO and NETFLIX are in the process of allowing the DVD's to be downloaded, no more mail (which is usually 2 days turn around).

something to consider - future upgradeability

regardless, it's personal preference, i'm fortunate, DIRECT TV, (the best) is partnered with TIVO, Bellsouth and offers everything in my viewing area, including $5.00 a month for a remote at my lake house.
