The article says that you need an inboard boat. I have friends in Santa Monica who are real surfers and also wake surfers. They strictly use I/O boats because they say you can get a better wake without a giant fatsack.

They all use various types of prop guards. I am not sure of the manufacturer, but a goggle image search shows several hundred varieties.

Just wondering why there is an East Coast myth about needing an inboard?
