It sounds like you have to many chemicals in the tank. All you need is a good bio-filter and they should do fine. When you start putting a bunch of different chemicals in the tank when you have a biological filter in can kill the good bacteria in the tank. It sounds like they are rubbing off there slime coat and bacteria is growing around there eyes.
