I can't speak to recent Rangers, but my 2001 sure enough had to have a new trans just as so many complained about em (around 135,000 miles). I bought a used trans from up north and put it in. No problems since.
Ford may be coming out with the F100 again. Unless you just gotta have something now, I'd wait, even if it were a year, for that model to be introduced again. Mileage is superior to the Rangers/smaller trucks, greater carry weight, etc. No idea cost, but suspect new to be less than that 20k you looking at for a Toy.
I had the best PU I ever had, a 98 Ford 150 fully loaded. Inline 6 motor with cool down blower. Sold it still running at 325,000 miles when I downsized and bought that used Ranger 4 years ago. Still a Ford man.
