Here's a link to the area of the dcnr website that provides info on boat registration. New boats have a 3 working day (72 hr.)grace period. This provides for a person to pick up a new boat on Friday and use it over the weekend. The bill of sale needs to be on board.

Used boats have no grace period. They must have a current Alabama registration. This would apply to the question about buying a boat with an out of state registration. Even though that registration is current the new owner needs to get an AL registration. There is an exemption if the boat owner doesn't change. That owner would have 90 days to get the boat registered in AL.

It seems like these questions about registration, license, etc. come up every so often. It would be nice if there were a FAQ section that would cover stuff like that.

Hope this helps.

Gary
