The old man I bought my place from said the it does indeed leave a mess in the lake. He said there is as much submerged debris, as there is floating. It also has a tendency to change the channel depths due to the water rushing down to the dam & spillway. The creeks & slews are all lined with debris. The flood plane at my place comes up to within 3 feet of my deck.
