Build a water level.

Any length of plastic clear tubing you have seen at Lowes or Home Depot. Fill with water and a tiny ammount of food coloring.

Be sure no air is left in the tube , leave both ends open. Set one end where you think the lake level may be at flood stage,, generally around 5 feet above full pool but has been 7 feet above full pool. The water in the tube will seek its own level and be true.

There ya go. Walk as far as the lenght of tubing you purchased will allow and check where the colored water in the level is on the property end
