Having had a place on the Logan Martin since 1990 Ive had opportunity to listen in to many conversations with folks who have been there longer than us. The way its been explained to me is that due to the surrounding terrain Logan Martin serves better as the main flood control lake on the Coosa chain.
Jordan and Mitchell are much smaller than Logan Martin thereby those lakes, although on occasion do assist in holding some water , cant be utilized nearly as well as Logan.
The terrain around Lay in many places and the fact that the steam plant at Wilsonville causes it to be almost useless for holding much water else the flooding of commercial and resedential properties be overwhelming.
Upstream, Water held thtere too high could flood a major city. Not good.
So we seem to be located on the most practical place for the power company, under orders and advice from the corps to hold water higher than the other lakes.
We KNOW this will happen and should each year be prepared to protect life and property in the event that Mother Nature offers up her surprises.
Honestly, it seems that each time its done this the fishing was better the following spring .
The drought is another thing entirely. I asked something about that and was given ,by someone here,, Ive forgotten who,the explaination of runs of river and lakes,,,, Ive yet to understand it but have accepted it.
One other thing,, I assisted my Brother who lives on the lake build his home there and if memory serves me correctly he contacted the Power co. and they shot elevations on his lot where their easement is and informed him that anything above that level that ever got flooded would be the Power Company's responsibility to replace or repair.
Lets face it, everything we enjoy on Logan Martin , The lake itself, the piers and boathouses we have there are all sitting in or on someone elses property if constructed inside the lake's easement..
Be safe and heres wishing you all a Good and Happy New Year.
