I bought a 63 1/2 Ford Fastback with a 427 with 2x4 barrels and solid lifters.
No air as it reved too high. Dealer let me order it for $50 over his cost and I paid $3,250. I used to get 8 miles/gallons. Those solid lifters sure sounded great. I was living in Atlanta at the time and used to take it cruising to the Varsity. Phil Bonner was my man at that time with his 427.

In those days the manufacturer had to sell 500 cars with the same engine they were going to race on NASCAR tracks to qualify the engine. Far different from today.

I remember the Mercury team that used the same engine as the Ford was located across from the Varsity. The owner was Bill Stroppe and his drivers included Parnelli Jones. The cars were blue and orange and I hung out there picking up stuff and cleaning up for free.

Those were the days.
