I welcome the barefoot and ignorant southern stereotype so long as it continues to serve as a deterrant for yankee settlement. Credentials serve to overcome this stereotype in the job market--elsewhere it doesnt matter. I too hear the "stupid southerner" generalizations, but they make me laugh. I have never been in the presence of a northerner that used that generalization AND could get more pieces of Trivial Pursuit pie than I could. I doubt that their are many Yanks that can say that they have never been in the precense of a southerner that was both more kind/polite than him/her AND used a stereotype about rude northerners. My point is, If you know the definition of a generalization, then why take personal offense to one? I can dance. . .I dont pout, whine, or complain everytime I hear a joke about white guys' inability to dance.
