I had an interesting conversation with one of the VPs at Russell Lands this evening at the amphitheater. Seems they have closed the Do It Express in Millbrook and are struggling at the Alex City and Wetumpka stores. New locations of Lowes (Wetumpka) and Home Depot (Alex City and Prattville) have finally opened up markets they basically had all to themselves until now.

If the AC Do It Center closes, how will that affect the construction in the Ridge where program builders are required to buy from the Do It Center? New construction in the Ridge has all but stopped, and there are dozens of homes that have been "unsaleable" for quite some time now. If the Do It Centers close, will Russell call in all the notes, or just let that chunk of income quietly fade away?

My experience tells me that we should all start praying for the builders. And the sooner the better. The Do It Centers have succeeded basically because they were the only game un town, and no matter how badly they treated you, you would be back because you didn't have a choice. Good prices though, but not always the best quality. Still, I hate to see the big chains waltz in to another nameless small town and put all the local companies out of business. (Though in the case of Alex City, I think it will definitely be an improvement. Wetumpka, I'm not so sure.)
