If the coal companies begin mining the Smith Lake area, watch the unemployment rate rise in our backyard (along with a few neighboring counties). Cullman County has invested heavily in their new Stoney Lonesome wilderness park. Coal trucks traveling with regularity on U.S. Highway 69 will most certainly alter the current environment and traffic patterns for the immediate area. The promotion of tourism in the area will contribute much more towards job creation and growth, than a handful of temporary mining jobs. When as a nation, will we begin to get our collective "act together"? Everyone needs to understand that a vibrant, growing economy, comes from within, not something that is sent to us courtesy Washington DC.
