WW, I operate a small family owned business. Nothing glamorous at all, but brings food to the table. I normally employ 25 + or - full time equivalent (55000 payroll hours annually). I most often use available college kids for about half of my work force, and deal with their scheduling needs. It causes me to carry a few more than needed, but, the associated expense is negligible. We're retail, and I start folks higher than WMT, TGT, WIN, or most any other competitor, which, on a 40 hour week, provides gross earnings more than $125 OVER the high AL unemployment check. Meantime, my UC Insurance is up 50% over last year, not as a result of claims, but due to fund shortfall. Today is December 3, and we learn that US unemployment is at 9.8%, has been higher than 9% for 17 months, and are panicked because NINETY NINE weeks of unemployment benefits are set to expire. Since January 1, 2010, from other than AU/SUSCC students, I have received 7 (SEVEN) that would be SEVEN (7), applications for employment. 3 of the 7 arrived in the same car that day in February.
