I was insulated from liberal nonsense by great parents who taught me to critically examine what you hear, evaluate it from the perspective of historical experience and not let emotion or a desire to be popular to drive my beliefs. I also went to a Catholic college before that became a misnomer. Went to mass each week and we were required to take religion/philosophy classes each year.

When I had a leftist professor I would challenge them when they were off the reservation but I have to say it was not all that often. Probably also helped that I was in the sciences where you tend to interact with less ideological types.
