If you haven't read this book (and forget the HBO special) it is very interesting, particularly as it relates to Jefferson. As for Hound's comment about his financial plight the book makes clear that while he may have believed in limited government he personally spent money like a drunken sailor (with apologies to sailors of all ages). I don't know if he went broker per se but he had significant financial troubles at various times in his life.
Besides that, he was right about his distrust of government although interestingly he was all for the French Revolution which created first chaos, then tyranny under the guise of democracy.
I also love what Reagan has to say about government, politics and world affairs. Check out these quotes.
