My brother-in-law used to be a mate on a schooner that sailed from Key West to Ft. Lauderdale on a regular basis. He and I were near Kowliga last weekend. A pontoon boat passed by sporting no less than four fenders hanging from it. His remark was telling: "Jed Clamplett has done bought himself a pontoon boat."

We've had this discussion before. Fenders, or "bumpers" as they are denominated locally, should be kept inside the boat when the boat is underway. "Bumpers" flopping on the outside of a boat while underway indicate that the operator knows diddly squat about proper boat handling.
