It should be observed that using treble hooks as stinger rigs for schoolie stripers usually leads to more throat hooked fish and causes more mortality than it is worth. There are several factors that cause fish to short strike. From my teachings by Jim Parramore and Cecil Williams while you may encounter a group of passive fish that short strike, that may not be the norm and the best advice is to try to find another group of fish in a more aggressive state. A lot of the short striking in this instance can be associated with the use of black salties for bait. As a former striper guide I have experimented with the salties and bottom line there is no substitute for live gizzard shad for consistent success on these stripers! I'm not saying the salties will not catch fish but I am saying that they will not catch fish like shad day in and day out. If shad makes up over ninety percent of a striper's natural diet why fish with anything else? Short striking has a lot to do with the barometric pressure as well as the other factors that coincide with it like weather conditions, weather patterns, moon phase, etc.. When conditions get tough, you are far better to search out fish that are staging closer to the bottom and understand that while mother nature has put unfavorable conditions upon you these type of staging fish will most likely stay in place longer than fish moving up in the column and are more likely to give you a quality bite rather than a passive look. I hope this post help solve some of the confusion about short striking and shows that the use of treble hooks and stinger rigs should be avoided. Circle hooks give exceptional hook up ratios and very rarely make the fish unsuitable for a safe return to the water unlike the trebles. It is up to us to preserve our own fishery!
