With any treatment, you are going to want to make sure you have prepped the wood as the cleaner it is the better your treatment is going to take. This will insure you are not back doing it again next year. Secondly, you will get more success if you apply the sealer with a somewhat stiff bristled brush ; you can spray it on but you should then brush it as well (I have heard this referred to as back brushing). One thing I think you should consider (and I'm not trying to sound like a zealot) is that we all have a responsibility to the lake and to others not to overuse product so that it is running off into the lake. Apply liberally, but with restraint.
