We've had two recent personal watercraft accidents in Alabama that resulted in extremely severe injuries when the people aboard the PWC either fell off or were thrown off the PWC near the jet-drive nozzle while the throttle was engaged. The thrust from these jet-drives can cause severe injuries to male and female body cavities and internal organs. In some cases people have died from these injuries. These injuries are the type that will change a person's life forever and can result in several future operations as well as a major change in lifestyle.

To best protect yourself from this type of injury it's recommended to wear a wet suit or other protective clothing and to NOT engage in any type of operation that would purposely throw an individual from a PWC or have a high likelihood of causing someone to fall off. Don't place small children on the rear of PWCs and never load it past its safe carrying capacity. We have seen an increase (particularly around the holidays) of 2-seaters carrying 3 or more people and 3-seaters carrying 4 or more. I once stopped a PWC on Lake Martin that had 5 teenage girls on it. These PWCs have reduced handling ability when overloaded and there will be a much higher probability of someone falling off near the jet drive nozzle.

Please take the time to educate your family and friends about what a jet nozzle is, what it does and where it's located. Also talk about the dangers posted by the intake. Hair and loose clothing are especially susceptible to being pulled into the impeller.
