As the water cools, start looking for schools of shad. I have caught plenty of bass that have spit up shad about the size of a Number 5 Shad Rap, so I keep a spinning rod rigged up with one of those as my primary rod, plus something I can cast a mile like a Redeye Shad for long distance bombing at schools, a deep diving crankbait, a topwater, and a Rapala. I can catch bass on all of those lures on a good fall day, as well as white bass when they decide to get in on the schooling action, and also the occasional crappie and even some larger than average bluegills.
