Well this is a great video for the 4th of July weekend.
-I feel mostly the way this Tom feels. By the way, I reread his namesake's book , "Common Sense" last month. It's still a great read.
-MOst of what he says is thought provoking. I love the term "non-representing representatives".
-I believe this video is wrong on at least two points which are always running around the web: 1) that our reps don't pay into Social Security, ---I think that since the mid-80's they do, and 2) that they get full pay in retirement after only one term. Now I think they are on a program pretty much like other gov workers, prorated by years served, age, etc.
-other than that these people as a whole are, in my view, a craven group of people. I've worked for them, against them, and socialized among them. Some are good, dedicated public servants (I'd put that at 30% plus or minus). Most of the rest are a blend of public servant and self-aggrandizing rascals who have only three objectives: self-aggrandizement, reelection, and reelection and will do almost anything for that.
-Most people who follow Congress will say that congressmen and women are all crooks, ---except in most cases their own congressman and woman; he or she is working well for the home district. Sought of contradictory , huh? --but, I gues that's the way we are. Personally, I believe the American people, at the next election, should throw them ALL out. Yes even the good ones, because apparently over the last two decades they were not good enough to prevent us from getting into this mess.
-but back to this video, I believe we all need to rekindle a desire to know we are being heard. I do not beleieve that the majority of the people who put the dems in power, actually were looking to get what we are now getting. So much of the old dem party programs that have never made it through, are now being jamed thru as part of bills no one is reading. Repubs are not any better, supporting programs that may be good for large businesses but not for the country's business. Soon we will have no manufacturing left.
-as a nation, I really believe we think that by voting once every four years that is all we have to do. That's just plain wrong.
-Enjoy the 4th. Before I light the fireworks, I always ask some of the kids to read the the preamble, and the first few sentences of the second paragraph of the Declaration. Try it, it might sound corny, but it makes people think.
