Chris, have you talked to Ernest Divine (Slim) at River's Edge? He is old, but he still knows more than most other mechanics have forgotten. He just finished fabricating parts for an outdrive on an older houseboat at the marina... I'm sure a transmission would be right up his alley. As you know, he no longer "officially" works there, but he's there just about every day. By the way, he'll be 89 tomorrow.
