Chameleons are found mostly in the tropical regions of Africa and Madagascar. There are a few non-native populations that can be found in Hawaii, California and Texas, but no true Chameleons are found anywhere else in the U.S., which you probably know includes Alabama.
The one trait that true Chameleons are known for is the ability to change colors. One of our local lizards, the Anole, also has that ability, and because of that many people mistakenly call them Chameleons. But, those people are wrong.
Besides Anoles, the other lizards found in the Lake Martin area are the Fence Lizard, the Mole Skink, the Five-Lined Skink, the BroadHeaded Skink, the Ground Skink, the Race Runner and the Glass Lizard. The Glass Lizard is legless, which leads many ignorant people to believe that it is a snake.
