You are right about the rain, but I've learned that hardwood trees on the coast (in sand) do not develop any roots deeper than the surface roots; therefore, they're easy to tip over. BTW, during Ivan I lost two trees on the coast, but 5 at the lake. Katrina got all but one on the coast, including two 89 year old pines (counted the rings!)
