Its a fact based on revenue collected versus outlays as reported by the Federal government so there is no premise to accept or not. You either accept the truth or you don't. But to answer your question.......

At a bare minimum I would not change our current tax rates. Any increase in rates for any income level will: a) not increase the growth rate in revenue, it will reduce the growth rate; and b) will negatively impact an already fragile economy, possibly pushing us into another recession ala the Clinton tax hikes, the GHW Bush tax hikes and every other tax hike. What I would prefer to see is a flatter tax with rates of 5%, 15% and 25% that could be structured to be revenue neutral by eliminating complexity, deductions and tax credits. I don't necessarily mind a progressive tax structure as long as everyone that earns an income pays some federal tax and there is some level of certainty for small businesses.

However, when you have DC filled with $1,000 per hour tax attorneys that donate large sums to politicians of all political stripes I seriously doubt this will ever happen.
