MM I have stated more than once that the sequester is in fact good...I support it...it gets us started. The sequester and the Super Committee set up to make the actuality of sequester unlikely, was a compromise proposed by Obama when the congress held him and our economy hostage at the end of 2011. It passed only because the GOP members supported it overwhelmingly while the Dems were split. We do need to cut federal spending across the board. Military, entitlement and domestic spending all have considerable fat, but not enough fat. We also need ADDITIONAL revenue just as proposed by Simpson - Bowles (remember them?, You guys love to point out how the president ignored his own commission while conveniently forgetting that commission proposed a 3 to 1 spending cut / tax increase ratio). Our tax policy is slanted to please corporations and the wealthy. With domestic oil production at the highest level in 22 years, could we not at least consider "adjusting" some of the subsidies? Should Wall Streeters making literally hundreds of millions of dollars manipulating money in ways that didn't even exist 25 years ago and which still aren't fully understood, pay capitol gains rather than ordinary income tax the way you and I do? Should we not at least consider capping the amount of tax deductions...are we all OK with allowable deductions being worth 38 cents on the dollar to folks with over $250,000 income but only worth 15 cents to most taxpayers. Is taxing money made through investing (money made using the brain and luck) at less than half the rate of salaried income (money made by your hands and sweat in many cases) the best way to stimulate the economy. Do you join the House Speaker in opposing true overall tax reform just because it presents the opportunity to increase revenue even though it could also make it fairer and simpler...especially if it is tied to specific spending cuts on a 1 to 2 tax to cut ratio as has been proposed by Obama? I you are opposed, would you still be opposed if it were proposed by a man or woman you had voted for?
The jobs numbers reflect what I suspected, the sequester, so for, has been much less devastating than the dire predictions from all sides after the Super Committee failed miserably. Now with the GOP kow-towing to the T party nuts even more than before they had their clock cleaned last November, we will probably have to wait until 2017 to finally clear the deck for action. The T party will likely call the shots for the GOP once more in 2014. 2016 will be a very different story. Beginning in 2017 Hillary can finally get it done!
