Now that is at least a reasonable question. Recall they nominated Roy Moore last time and I suspect they were loathe to have another nominee that would turn away conservative voters, hence Tuberville over Sessions. So yes, maybe they could have found someone better in the primary but it really came down to Tuberville and Sessions and far too many GOP voters were upset with Sessions and his conduct in the Trump admin. I think people rightly feared that lots of them would stay home or not vote for Sessions thereby allowing Jones to hold on. Very rational and smart of them given the experience with Roy Moore.
I will also say, and I mean this with no disrespect, you don't have to be a brain surgeon to be a Senator and do a good job. Politicians prove that every day. I do think that a successful Div I NCAA coach has to possess a fair amount of executive function, have to be able to judge people, have the be able to delegate successfully and so on. It is not just understanding x's and o's. There is a lot more to it and if it were easy everyone would do it.....but they don't and can't and fail at the job every day.
