While I think what Pelosi said was irresponsible and she should be fired for it; I don't believe that Republicans didn't vote for the bill because of what she said. I think there are a lot of fiscally conservative Republicans who don't like the bailout. On one of the news shows this morning (can't remember if it was CNBC or MSNBC or CNN) they said that the number of emails and phone calls to the Hill by their constituites was overwhelmingly against the buyout. The "Main Street" attitude is why bail out people who screwed up so badly?
I think the most sobering thing is realizing that there is a total lack of leadership by either party. And where are the Presidential "would be's" -- I don't see either one of them stepping into a leadership role. It's sad and kinda frightening. I've seen them be absolute pit bulls on constituites issues that are inconsequential to the overall health of the US -- but they have suddenly turned into poodles.
