We have had a place on Lake Martin for 10 years now.
Sun plants/flowers: Mexican Heather is nice for borders or at edge of rock garden or in a cluster. The usual annuals do really well, like marigolds, zinnias (great to cut for a vase),periwinkles (or vincas). Of course, roses, encore azaleas, gardenias and confederate jasmine. We like Indian Hawthorne for a nice perennial shrub, grows quickly, needs no attention, drought tolerant. Has small white or pink flowers in spring to summer, then berries in fall to winter. (BUT the deer LOVE them, so put a deterrent nearby or plant in fenced area.) Purslane does well in a pot or in the ground, spreads and has nice colors, requires almost no attention whatsoever, very drought tolerant.
In the shade, hostas do nicely in a pot on the porch. Impatiens will bloom profusely in a shaded area. Ferns, whatever varieties are native to this area, will do great in shade.
