I've been watching the level teeter-totter up and down within an inch today. Since rainfall is not currently a factor, I suspect that they are balancing Martin while alleviating Harris (Wedowee), which reached full pool December 27th.
According to day-end data, there have been 83 days Lake Martin has been above 490 Datum since 1970. The last time was June 19, 1989. The hightest was 490.8 Datum on April 13, 1979. Most of those 83 days are fractions over 490.
If you look at the Martin charts, you'll see a similar rain event at the end of 2013 but the level rose just 4 feet. It took 12 days to lower 4 feet back to 480 datum.
