I use a lowrance combination bottem finder/GPS that uses Lowrance's Map Create CD's to create "custom maps" of whatever area you want. The detail is very good, even showing the name of the dirt road my cabin is on. Most top shelf sporting good stores can demo both Garmin and Lowrance. I don't think there is much difference in the quality of the two. I would, and have, navigated in less than 1/4 mile visibility with no problems. Of course i was at idle speed.
