I've heard credible reports of bears in Shelby County in recent years, and recently read that the population of bears in the coastal areas of Florida is greatly increased (they actually have highway signs warning of bear crossings near Port St. Joe), as well as the swamp areas north of Mobile. One was struck and killed by a car in the Springville area last year, I believe. Makes me think they are already around... just smart enough not to be seen!

I won't worry about them though, black bears aren't aggressive. But call me if you spot a grizzly!
