The city closed Lakeside Park’s swimming beach and there are barricades with crime tape encircling the beach area to keep the public out.

The city closed the beach last Thursday, after a local Logan Martin Lake Protection Association volunteer water monitor collected water samples from the beach area, showing extremely high levels of the E. coli bacteria.

Isabella Trussell, LMLPA water testing coordinator, said she reported the findings to city officials Thursday, who promptly closed the swimming area.

She said the samples were collected by one of their volunteers immediately after it rained last week.

Trussell said they suspect the source of the E. coli bacteria in the water is from goose waste at Lakeside Park. She said after heavy rains, goose fecal mater is part of the runoff that enters the water from the shore.

“We don’t know if it’s from the geese; we suspect it’s from the geese,” Trussell said, adding that there could be another source of the bacteria.

“We do know the geese are a problem,” she said.
