I think everyone will agree that right now is the best time to catch big stripers. The water temp has cooled down and they are higher in the water column.
Guides:we have a few good ones locally. I have used David Hare at Alex City guide service multiple times. I saw him on the water yesterday. He is great! http://www.alexcityguideservice.com/ 256-401-3089
Your choice of a good, local, ethical guide is critical.
As The Outlook reported, some guides based out of Smith Lake were charged with importing Blueback Herring, an invasive baitfish species. According to the article, they have been doing it for years on Smith, and introduction by fishermen is suspected here on Martin.
To quote from the article: “The competition that these fish pose to our native game fish is potentially substantial,” said Nick Nichols, ADCNR’s Fisheries Chief. “Invasive species can completely disrupt the balance necessary in the management of a quality fishery. The introduction of blueback herring into Smith Lake is a prime example of the negative impact that an invasive species can have on native ecosystems.”
