Mildew problem appears to be solved on my pontoon

I may be the last to know, but the Zep Clear Shell Mold & Mildew Cleaner worked great. Tried it for the first time on my pontoon. Cleaned the pontoon before covering. Also used a blue tarp over the boat cover this time. Boat cover is more of a dust cover than a water shield. When I uncovered the pontoon this week, I could not see any mildew!!!. This also worked on my ski boat. Will be doing this again next year. Can buy this product at Lowes and I think also at Home depot. Incidently, I do not own stock in any of these two companies.

Good to know as everyone fights this problem every year. I have no experience with this product, does it say safe to use on boats or any reference to marine environment? The reason I am asking is there are several products on the market like this that are not safe to use on marine vinyl or UV poly marine thread. Whatever the product of choice is, I want to warn people against using bleach. It will destroy your vinyl and stitching over time. I've seen it first hand so many times. Boat looks great after the cleaning but then the problems start. A few other products that work, Starbrite mold and mildew remover and Mary Kate mildew cleaner. Glad to hear of the new player u found as well.

I used a product on our pontoon boat from Wal-Mart....advertised to remove mildew and not damage fabric or threads..I forget the name but it is one of those companies that specializes in boats and RVs...only managed to get half the boat done before winter. Sprayed that half with the WalMart version of Lysol Bathroom Disinfectant Spray. Boat was covered with one of those full covers with four poles connected to vents down the centerline, creating a "tent" appearance. Boat stayed in water all winter, and when I uncovered it this spring the untreated half looked awful, while the treated half had only two dime-sized spots of mildew. So, the suggestion is that if you don't have a boat house or covered boat slip, after you have removed the mildew spray it with disinfectant spray and that will help to retard new growth.
BTW, got the Lysol idea from the forum. Thanks to the kind person who originally posted it.

Here is a good article a few years old where they tested various products to eliminate mildew. Note the ones with bleach. Somewhat different than some of the posts.

As both the article and 4thelake said (and he should know), bleach is really bad for boat seats....don't know why some folks have a hard time admitting that.

Don't worry. Those who can't admit that come to see me at some point!

I used it also. Already had some black spots that cannot be removed but I have no new mildew after leaving the pontoon covered on the lake bed all winter. Stuff is not cheap but it seems to work.

magic eraser works for me

Was lazy last fall and didn't use the cover on the deck boat over winter. Won't happen again. I used Wal-Marts version of Magic Eraser to clean the mildewed seats. Took some elbow grease, but after rinsing they look brand new. I don't know if they contain anything that'll mess with the UV properties of the vinyl or attack the stitching, but I believe they're better for the application than a chlorox mixture.
