Subject:   Fishing off the the pier for Stripers?
Date:   4/1/2010 12:05:03 PM

I'll be fishing up in Manoy Creek off a pier for Crappie this weekend. While fishing for Crappie I want to have one rig with a Gizzard Shad on it for Stripers.

Any tips on how you would rig it? Weight? Bobber? Hook through the mouth or tail?

Just curious what you think? thanks!

I would rig a 2 or 3/0 hook, Gamakatsu Octapus for example, through the nostrils of the shad. I would use a balloon as a cork so it is easy to adjust the depth. Blow the balloon up about the size of a baseball and tie it off, use the same knot again around the line to attach it. I would start off just letting the shad swim free with no weight. Give him about 15 feet of lead to the balloon, more if it is deeper where you will be fishing. If the water is more than 20 feet deep where you will be fishing, try a 2 oz barrel swivel weight tied above the shad about 3 feet. use the balloon as a cork and put the shad about 20 feet deep. make sure the button is mashed or you might loose a rod, good luck.

You have until about the end of May to catch them in water less than 30 feet deep, a little longer if you are fishing at night. After that the water does not have enough oxygen to support the stripe over 16 inches long. If you have a green monster light around your dock, now is a good time to catch a big one at night cruising the light, but just leave it on during the week and tell me where it is so I can fish it.
