Pontoon acid wash

Warning!! If you own a JC toon boat, do not acid wash the pontoons! I'm very happy this happened to my boat and not a customers. I had some horrible results when I acid washed mine. Streaks, milky white spots, and just overall a horrible result. After calling JC Mfg., I was told they use a coating called dura coat, which is just a lacquer finish. I will now, according to them, have to run three passes of thinner on a rag over the toon to take off the finish and then possibly need to buff the toon at that point. Needless to say, I'm not to happy. I have acid washed at least a dozen of my customers toons for them prior to delivery with new upholstery. Never have I seen this kind of thing. Hope my experience helps someone from this disaster. Thanks again to forum members for making my business a success. Phil

You shoulda seen the way that pontoon boat stood up, got off the trailer and ran down the road man - that was cooool...

I recall a few other companies had/have similar products as an option or standard on their pontoons. There is a product available called Sharkhide which is a sealer for pontoons and I've seen other brands. As you discovered, any pontoon that is sealed should not be acid washed.
