Hi, my family and I recently moved to N AL.  I grew up in N MS where there were several large lakes with plenty of public access and beaches.

I would love to take my six year old to Smith Lake during the spring and summer, let her play on a beach and in the lake, but have had a difficult time finding access spots.  I've read there are 500 miles of lakefront.  Can anyone tell me where I can take a child for a day trip to the lake, sans boat, but for paddling at the edge and playing in the water?  Aside from the park in Cullman, is there nowhere for non-property owners to swim?  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Most of the shoreline is privatly owned and not condusive to wading out into the water. Alot of steep rocky bluffs along the shoreline. Smith Lake Park in Cullman like you already mentioned is the most popular.

On the other end of the lake (Bankhead Forest area)  there are Corinth Recreation Area and Houston Recreation Area( Camping spots and  beach areas).

Thats really the only spots I can think of that have a "beach" type area.

Clear Creek Park and Duncan Bridge Marina both have a beach area.

There is a beach area at Arrowhead Park in Crane Hill off of CR 222. They also have some picnic tables under the trees,  tent camping and RV spots.
