I posted on this topic over a year ago but only got a few responses. I did a lot of research on Marine GPS devices and think I made a good choice. In July 2020, I bought a Garmin Echomap UHD 73cv Fish Finder/Chartplotter Combo for $649. I went with Garmin because it seems to be the only device that has add-on software that has the most detailed mapping of Lake Martin.
There are a lot of choices for Marine GPS and Garmin itself has a lot of differenty sizes and applications. My device is quite good and would be suitable for anyone navigating the lake and/or interested in using it for fishing.
But, the best part is that Garmin mapped all the contours of Lake Martin about 5 years ago. The add-on Garmin LakeVu G3 Ultra East software is about $150 to $200, but it provides Dynamic Lake Level support. The software adjusts the contours depending on the lake level so you can avoid hidden underwater obstructions even if the level is below full pool. This might help save damaged props or running aground. If you have questions, let me know. I hope this helps.
