Anybody know how to measure the depth of water you will have for your dock? I've been told to put a pole in the water, measure up the poll the number feet currently under full pool, then tie a line from that spot to the dock. Will this work?

In case anyone is wondering why in the world I need to do this, I'm checking out a lot that I might purchase.

no water line to see? i would think you should be able to spot some type of water line. you could check this site for the water level on the day you measure, then measure up from that to full pool. Remembering full pool is only a couple of months during the year.

I haven't looked at the property that closely yet. I just drove by it this morning before work. From the pictures I have, it looks like it will be pretty shallow, even at full pool. If it's too shallow for a boat, I definitely won't buy.

Even tho we only have full pool once in awhile...you dont want your dock to ever be UNDER water so must allow for that....and the daily levels are somewhat behind...by as much as several inches...but whne it stays stable a couple days and no rain then the reading shd be pretty accurate...like right now its about right...but it is also raising some daily

Is your dock stationary or floating? Also is it level? So, just what are you trying to buy a lot of?

I think another major consideration that is probably obvious but has not been discussed: Is how far out will you desire to build the dock or will APCO allow you to extend the dock into the Lake?

There is no dock there now. The lot is on a very small slough, so I don't think a 50 foot pier would be acceptable. From side to side this slough is only about 30 yards. Not a great location, but I'll take whatever I can get for this price.

Do you have to get permission from APCO before building a dock?

APC states that you can build a dock that does not exceed more than 1/3 the distance of the water between land, and it may not exceed fifty feet. There is more information at the Alabama Power Company web site. You must get a permit from them prior to building. The good news is that the permit is free.

have a dock?

just f.y.i.

when we were hunting for our place, which ended up on big open water, with decent water level, all we could think about was....water, pier height, etc...that almost dictated our purchase, actually it probably still had a major influence. Regardless, just this past week will the pontoon boat on the end of our pier launch. Too cold really to go out now, took it out for a minute or two last weekend. Now, what i'm trying to say...is... we were all concerned about using the boats, and the water level, and what ended up happening for us, is the months the water is too low, we wouldn't be using them anyway.

Now, if I were an avid fisherman, well, i'd have to consider other options, and fortunately there are other options for the low water months.

best of luck to you, try to locate a neighbor to this house, get some input from them.
