Thanks to all who responded to my first plea for advice. We close on a house in a few weeks. Now the hard part. This one needs some work. I have read the thread on carpet and painting a roof. I need a great brick or stone mason and someone who can do some remodeling. Mostly replacing windows for now but a bigger job down the road when the finances recover. Also, anybody know someone who is a structual engineer in the area or do I need to find someone at Auburn and bring them in. There are no plans available for the house and there are a lot of small rooms. I would like to take out non-load bearing walls...without making any big mistakes.

Do you know how to do any of the work yourself? If so, what about getting some of the day-workers and you supervise?
Another option is find a fraternity on campus who has someone who has worked in the field and hire them out. To make it even better, if you belonged to a fraternity, see if a chapter exists on campus. They usually do great work.
I mention this based on your stmt of letting the finances recover. The above options are possible if you want the work done sooner. The options, of course, depend on finding competent people to do the job.

Good ideas. Thanks. Yes, I am a big do-it-yourselfer although age has cut down on the time my back and knees hold out. Here, in Birmingham, there is a corner that you can go to and pick up as many day workers as you need. Is there a simular spot in Alex City or Dadesville? That could get me through a lot of the inital work. I still need someone who really knows remodeling for some of my loftier plans. I can rip up old carpet and tile the floors but I need help designing an addition to the house. Thanks

We have used Scotty Goodson for several construction jobs - he's does really good work and he shows up as promised! 825-7467 in Dadeville.
Welcome! This is a great place to be!

Thank you both for the suggestions. As soon as we close I will talk with both gentlemen and hopefully at least one will be willing to help me. It is most unfortunate that the builder put this house about 30 degrees off of the angle that it needed to be at to enjoy the lake view. Since I can't move the house I thought we could add some "interesting" angles and a lot of windows. The other things like tile and paint I will do myself.

My nephew is a building science major at AU. He's working on my house now and has a co-op job building a skyscrapper in in ATL this summer, but he might have time to do the help with the planning stages or know some other guys who might help. If you want his number email me
