I was sitting in my living room Sunday afternoon and saw what appeared to be a fishing boat with a flashing light on top of it driving very close to people's docks at a high rate of speed. He was really acting a fool. He nearly clipped a few dock and a couple of pontoon boats. A couple of my friends and I decided to walk out on our dock and get his attention. As the boat approached us we read the words SURVEY TEAM on the side of the boat. The driver stopped and told us he was working for a company out of Boston. The boat had Rhode Island plates on it. The fellow continued talking and informed us that he was taking a gps reading of the floor of the lake. He said that his company is the company trying to get approval to exhume all the old trees off the floor of the lake. I would like you to be aware of this boat and be careful around it because the guy can't seem to drive. He's going to hurt someone. I also heard there may be up to 3 of these boats on the lake and they will probably be here for the next 3-4 weeks. I am posting to let you know what's going on and to ask how YOU feel about these people coming in and messing with our lake. Will this affect the quality of the water, fish, or anything else.

I'm all for removing trees , but it seems it would be a nearly impossible task. I hope it wouldn't disturb the local ecology but it sure seems likely. Are you sure this guy wasn't just F@#%*#@ with you?

Might be pulling your leg or you are pulling ours.

My neighbor who is in her late 70s said her father was hired in the 1920s to remove trees from the lake bottom before the lake was filled. Might be a few trees in the very, very deep parts of the lake, but can't imagine it would be economically wise to retrieve them. Not many black walnut trees in Alabama.

There are lots of cut trees that were chained together and left on the bottom. They couldn't use all the lumber from the felled trees and needed something to do with them. At lease that is what the that book, let's see I can't remember the exact name, but it is something like Loafing Streams, says.

Hey people this is not a joke. It is a real issue. The lake watch organization discussed the topic in their last newsletter. I will try and link the page with the information to this post. The lake watch website is www.lakewatch.org. The Oct. 22, 2004, newsletter #33, talks about the tree salvage project. It says the private company wants to exhume heart pine, a desireable lumber for building homes, from the bottom of the lake. This newsletter also discusses a substance plume in the pineywoods area that many of you might be interested in reading. This is a reputable organization. They have a link off of the Lake Martin.com website. Just click on the community tab at the top of the page then go to clubs/organizations then click on Lake Watch of Lake Martin or just click on the link to read the newsletter article. I also spoke with local officials who were in touch with the marine police and they also acknowledged the presence of the survey team on Lake Martin.

We saw the survey boat also. We're north of the 280 bridge. He took 3 very close passes at our boat slip. We thought maybe he was checking boat registrations and that was why he was so close to the dock. He was driving way too fast for our small slough and he was making tight circles.

That boat also came into our slough...way too fast and doing side to side passes covering the entire slough....churned the water so violently that I thought it would rip my floating jetski lift from the pier....Alabama Power needs to know that these thugs are ruthless with no regard for personal property on the lake!
