Ok, I have all the stuff to rig up a cheapskate version of the famous green monster light. I will put it all together and flip the switch Saturday night. If you never hear from me again IT DIDN'T WORK, but if it does (cross your fingers) I will post pictures and detailed instructions. Wish me luck! OBC

Make sure you are properly grounded. I would guess a copper rod into the ground with a bare copper with tied to it. Just bite down on the other end when you flip the switch............

I hooked my homemade Green Monster up and had plenty of fish the first night. Caught them on a white rooster tail and a white spinner bait on the second night but after that night they would not hit anything I threw out, any ideas on what to throw except a net?

I had good luck with shiners last weekend. caught stripers and crappie. I stayed about 15 feet away from the light but the same depth. Fished 8:30 to 10:30
|
I had to go to a birthday party and didn't get a chance. I plan on doing it this afternoon. Will let you know

Hurry with some instructions and pictures. I would be glad to meet someone to show me what they have made...

I tried to email you but it appears it is down, Someone else that built one said he had an issue with heat build up, I will be checking mine since I used a bigger box to see if I also have high heat. Can't check until this weekend and I'll get back to you on Monday.
|
I wonder where the heat issue would come from?

The ballast that sends voltage to the bulb would be my guess. I used a 6x6x4 box and put the sensor on the outside so it would cycle on and off, I think the other person used a 4x4x4 box and put the sensor inside so it only comes on when plugged in. I'll check mine this weekend and if it feels very hot I'll unplug it and research the heat range of the box. It is the gray plastic exterior box sold at home depot

Maybe that is why the Green Monster box, which is about the same size as yours, has two covered air circulation tubes on the top, extending up about 1" then covered with a cap.
Just a thought.

I checked the heat level in my box and it did not seem to bad, was able to hold my hand on the box and not get burned. I will keep an eye on this and if it appears the box is deforming I will vent it.

OK, I've read all the posts about the lite, and I've looked at the monster web-site, all to no avail. All I see or hear is a protected mercury-vapor bulb, FLOATING?? over a weight attached to a 110VAC power source. Is that all? Surely not. Is the bulb really floating, and why is it green as pictured? Why is there a heat problem if you are not using a transformer function? I am using a 50 watt low voltage halogen fixture fixed to a concrete block about 1 foot off the bottom, pointed up, in 9 feet of water. I can see minnows, bream, and some very large shadows circling on occasion. What's special about this light, and how is it rigged? Sounds dangerous for snorkelers??

in the clear water of lake martin the vapor bulb shines green as well as it will float if you just drop it in the water so you have to secure it. as far as the over heating I don't know how they rigged theirs but all i have done is take a regular dusk to dawn light sealed the devil out of it with silicone put a brick on about 2 foot line tied it up ran the wire up to a plug on my dock and it works. make sure when you connect the wires that you use heat shrink or use a watertight junction box to put the cord onto the light pigtail.

Not just Heat Shrink tubing but adhesive lined Heat Shrink tubing. It will have a hot melt glue lined on the inside that melts when you heat the tubing to shrink it.. Its water tight.

Anyone have any pics of the completed "econo version" that they can post? (Out of water, of course.)
Thanks,
