Heard rumors that a friend of mine was severely injured in a boating accident this morning.
Supposedly he was in a bass boat, ran into a bridge abutment and is now in a hospital in Montgomery with multiple facial injuries. If any one has any info please post the details. Thanks in advance.

One injured in morning boat accident

A resident of Lagrange, Ga. has undergone facial surgery after a boating accident on Lake Martin early Friday morning.

Luther “Ken” Young, age 61, was enjoying time on his Bass Tracker aluminum fishing boat when the boat went crashed under a dock in the Sandy Creek area of Lake Martin.

“He went in one side and out the other,” said Alabama Marine Police Officer Mark Fuller.

Fuller said both the boat and Young’s body came in contact with the dock.

A witness who was also in a boat on the lake assisted the victim back to his home on the lake. Young’s wife then took him to Russell Medical Center, where he was transported to Baptist South Hospital Montgomery.

“He had approximately 12 facial fractures and some lacerations,” Fuller said.

Fuller said Young was in stable condition before he went into surgery.

Fuller said he is unsure of what caused the accident.

“It’s definitely uncommon,” he said. “Apparently the driver or operator was distracted by something.”

Fuller said there is nothing that leads him to believe alcohol was involved with the accident.

“It’s my understanding it was a new boat to the victim,” Fuller said. “He may have been dealing with some features on that.”

Young, who was the operator and only passenger of the boat, was the only person injured. There was no one on the dock at the time of the accident.

“There were a couple of broken boards under the dock,” Fuller said.

I am sorry to hear about this accident. I grew up just a few doors away from the Young family in Auburn. Ken's father, Luther Young, was the head tennis coach at Auburn University for many years. Ken's mother was my Biology teacher at Auburn High School.

Ken's sister, Nancy Young Fornter, has been nominated to become the next President of the Auburn Alumni Association. She is a resident of Huntsville, AL where she is Coordinator of Guidance Services for Huntsville City Schools.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Ken.

Glad to hear he is doing ok. I witnesses the accident. He was going out toward open water and either did not see the dock or accidently turned the wheel. He was doing about 15 to 20 and slammed into the dock. It tore off the front seat, tore off the trolling moter, tore off the windshield, smashed the gages, He hit his face straight on the dock. The boat came out the other side. I was skiing my wife and killed the boat then dove into the water and got into his boat. He was bleeding from the mouth and nose and was in terrible pain. He was able to tell me where he lived and I drove him back to his house. His wife was outside drinking coffee and I started yelling for her to get the keys. I offered to drive them but she said she could do it and they loaded into the truck and left. The boat had splintered wood all over it. I spoke to his wife later and she said that it was only the second time he had put that new boat in the water but he had been fishing the area for 50 years. Those new boats have tight steering and he may have headed toward the open water then leaned over to get something and turned too much. He was shocked that he hit the dock. As bad as it was he's lucky to be alive.
