Being a "new" full time resident, when is the right time to put down new pine straw and to plant new plants. I guess I'm asking at what point are we no longer in danger of a freeze? When does one consider "Spring" to be here? (In VA, I was safe after April 15th)
Also, does anyone know of anyone that will provide and spread pinestraw for a reasonable price?

Hmmm after tax day. I think you are safe after the 1st of March.

To me, it depends on the type plant. Many years we have a heavy frost during March, or several times snow. Annuals in that case are toast, especially vegetable plants. April is safer. Bushes/shrubs/trees are probably OK in March, but be ready with a frost cover.

I have used Adam Patterson, Patterson Professional Landscaping, many times and he is one of the very best landscapers in the Lake Martin area. He's there when he says he will be there or he calls and lets you know he will be late. He is very fair on what he charges and does a great job and cleans up after his work is done. You can reach him at (cell) 256-596-2446 or (home) 256-825-0416. Give him a call, I know you will be pleased with his service.

I've used him as well. Very good. And he is an Auburn graduate.

Easter weekend, especially if you have the type trees to shed those helicopter type pods as they do not fall till sometime in early April.

Check out these web sites. They probably provide more information than you want to know. ACES also provides free professional advise through their local offices. The Tallapoosa County office is in Dadeville, (256) 825-1050. http://www.aces.edu/homegarden/ http://www.aces.edu/counties/Tallapoosa/

The old timers say that if it thunders in February you can count on a last blast of freezing weather almost to the day 60 days later. Watch the sky and see. I am guessing that we will have a cold blast about April 10th. if we get the storms predicted for the next couple of days you will want to wait for your annuals. February is the month to cut back your roses however. Pick up a Farmers' Almanac. They are a pretty good source for your planting and always have some good tips in them.
