I guess I must be on the wrong page on this "clunker" stuff...

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline. A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year. They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons per year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil…
5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption. And 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75 per bbl.

So, we all just spent $3 billion...to save $350 million.

Hmmmmmmmmm. How good a deal was that?
But, I'm thinking that they’ll probably do a great job with health care, though!

There were in general, two kinds of people who took advantage of this program – those who were already considering a trade, and those whose neighbor or friend had a nicer car. Those who had planned to trade just got the rest of the taxpayers in the village to help them get that shiny new set of wheels; the rest will be delinquent on their new loans within three months – right around Christmas. Your math does not take this into effect, and totally misses the boat on the next packages of redistribution. I foresee a “Right to Personal Transportation” bill to take over the bad paper from those who cannot afford the new payments and an “Every Child Deserves a Great Christmas” bill so that there is no inequality along the blocks of our cities. Come on WW, look at how much more our Government can do for us, and yes, our medical woes will be fixed with the same thoughtfulness and efficiency. Get on board and forget about out of date ideas like that pesky Constitution.

Conservatives were angry that local business, other than auto dealers, were not receiving stimulus assistance to boost local spending.

Well, your prayers have been answered. A federal "cash for appliances" program is likely on its way to a store near you before the end of the year.

Comparatively unnoticed in the economic stimulus package approved by Congress earlier this year was a $300 million program offering rebates to buyers of more energy-efficient appliances and other products with the Energy Star label.

Just like the recently completed cash-for-clunkers program, the more modest cash-for-appliances program is designed to boost the U.S. economy through consumer spending and take less energy-efficient products out of circulation.

Yet, it differs from cash for clunkers on key points. The individual states will run their own appliance rebate programs, and consumers will not have to haul their bulky appliances to a store in exchange for new ones.

Different states will likely propose varying rebate amounts, expected to range from $50 to $200.

If you are a true Conservative, write to your State Representative and tell them to stop this silly pay out of funds for appliances.

You are correct GF, this is also another redistribution plan that our generous Government is sponsoring on our dime. It does not matter who is administering the money - in this case it just means that the Feds will take their "fair share", will pass the balance to the states who, believe it or not, will take their "fair share." Think of it as trickle down economics viewed in a carnival mirror.
